Three Things I Learned at Cannon Trust School
Every day here at Allen Trust Company, I work with a team that focuses on ensuring the decisions we make on behalf of our clients are financially responsible and reflect their wishes. As an Executive Assistant, I’ve seen first hand the importance of the extraordinary expertise our team provides and have been hungry to learn how – and why those decisions are made.
I recently returned from Cannon Trust School, a program focusing on the technical application of property law, tax law, and trust instruments among other things. The week-long session, hosted on the beautiful Notre Dame campus, gave me a deep-dive into trust administration and whet my appetite to know more about trust administration.
As I said goodbye to new friends (and waited for my exam results), I took some time to reflect on what I learned. My three big takeaways:
It takes a village. I now have a greater understanding and respect for my colleagues here at Allen Trust Company – and our culture. Everyone has an individual and important role that is critical in meeting and exceeding our clients’ expectations. Working with everyone in such a positive environment truly leads to greater success for our clients.
Same problems; different approach. It was incredible to hear the stories of my classmates from all around the country and discover that no matter in which state or city they live, we all have the same challenges. Going through this process with them, gave us the opportunity to learn different approaches to solving issues.
Asking the right questions takes as much skill as giving the right answers. If there’s one mantra we all learned, it’s that what and also how you ask a question, is key. Meaning, being thoughtful in crafting unique questions, and actually listening to the response, allows you to understand the needs of the clients and provide them with the best advice for their financial futures.
I’m thrilled to say, I passed my exam and plan on continuing my education within trust administration. Because of this experience, my classmates and I will keep in touch and continue to share our experiences, frustrations and successes as we navigate our path on this exciting educational journey.
